As a result of a sting investigation limousine hire company owner Darryl Giuotto of Fenelon Falls was recently found guilty on two counts for violations under the City of Kawartha Lakes Taxi and Limousine licensing laws. On June 27, he received two fines of $4,000 each for not obtaining a Limousine Licence and failing to ensure vehicles and equipment conform to the requirements of the by-law, the city stated in a release.
Although hire limos are the only way to arrive in style at the school prom and other special occasions, many stretch limousines are not licensed and some are in fact not legal. Notwithstanding the fact that in the UK new licensing laws were introduced in January 2008, investigations by the national chauffeur drivers' trade association, estimate that up to 40 per cent of operators are have not obtained the new certificate. Police and local councils as part of their on going investigations into the limo hire industry, are now increasing their checks on stretch limo operators with “prom swoops” outside school party venues. Some councils are insisting that all drivers are checked for criminal records if they intend to carry children.
