Training in New Limos

These days being a professional limousine chauffer requires more skills than just being able to drive carefully. They are under going training which includes use of a car as a shield, travelling in a tight motorcade and reversing at speed.

Twelve of the luxury limousines were taken on manoeuvres at Manfeild Park raceway near Feilding this month as their drivers got more acquainted with the $90,000 cars.  The track was normally used for police driver training once a week but Crown chauffeurs went there periodically to refresh their skills and practise manoeuvres that would be dangerous on a public road.

BMW New Zealand driving training chief instructor Mike Eady was impressed by the chauffeurs' skill and poise. The BMW 3-litre turbo diesel vehicles can reach up to 238kmh, and while Eady said that the chauffers weren’t race-car drivers, their driving skills were well above average and he was very impressed. Citing that the politicians were in pretty safe hands.

Due to recent global events, the training exercise was more about a quick response to threats posed by terrorists and the like. Honing their driving skills, the chauffeurs practised driving close in a motorcade, reversing at high speed to get out of danger, taking corners correctly and using the limousines as a security shield to stop bombs and bullets.

The chauffeur-driven limousines will carry the prime minister, the leader of the Opposition, ministers, judges, visiting heads of state and royalty. While the model is not for sale in NZ and has to be custom-made in Germany, the Government has ordered 34 of the titanium silver BMWs to be delivered within three years.
